Gems of American Scenery Consisting of Stereoscopic Views among the White Mountains with Descriptive Text… [4], 100 pp. Illustrated with lithographic double-page map followed by 24 Albertype stereo views. 8vo., 195 x 120 mm, bound in publisher’s brown cloth with the stereo viewer bound to the front cover and folded over the front paste-down. New York: Harroun & Bierstadt, 1878.
A fine copy of this collection of stereo views of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Published by Edward Bierstadt brother of the more well-known Albert Bierstadt, however, he was responsible for making engravings of his brother’s famed landscapes. The stereo viewer is conveniently bound to the book and an amusing photograph at the beginning demonstrates the proper use of the viewer.
PROVENANCE: Blind stamp of Albert S. Bickmore on the title page and that of the Library of the American Museum of the Natural History on the first page of the introduction. Bickmore was the central figure in the founding of the American Museum of the Natural History in New York.
