The Golden Bough a Study in Magic and Religion. 12 volumes. First volume with frontispiece reproducing J.M.W. Turner’s The Golden Bough. 8vo., 225 x 160 mm, bound in publisher’s green gilt stamped cloth. New York: The MacMillan Company, 1935.
American Third Edition, greatly expanded (the First Edition consisted of only two volumes). The definitive edition of this classic on the history of the relationship between magic and religion. Although the academic validity of Frazer’s work is questionable, its influence on literature throughout the twentieth century is not.
Ownership inscription on the fly-leaf of each volume except ‘Balder the Beautiful Vol. 1’ which has a warm presentation to said owner dated September 1942. A fine, tight set with just one insignificant small stain to the spine of one volume.
