Shikimei sokan.  2 volumes (one text, one plates).  178 pp.  Illustrated with 54 full, page plates with a total of 160 colour samples.  8vo., 190 x 110 mm, text bound in original wrappers, plates attached to the original chitsu case, accordion folded.  All preserved in the publisher’s printed cardboard box.  Tokyo: Shunjusha, 1931.

First Edition.  Sanzo Wada’s first attempt at colour nomenclature, preceding his opus, Haishoku sokan by two years.  Wada (1883-1967), a painter and costume designer, founded the Japan Standard Color Association in 1927 and its successor, the Japan Color Research Institute.  His work on colour remains important today with Haishoku sokan having recently been reprinted.  A fine copy, with some of the usual light offsetting, complete with the original fragile cardboard box.
