Risoval’naya shkola na 20 listakh, izdannaya Obshchestvom pooshchreniya khudozhnikov [Drawing School on 20 Sheets, Published by the Society for the Encouragement of Artists].  Title sheet followed by 20 lithographic plates.  Oblong Folio, 350 x 510 mm, loose as issued in later slipcase and chemise.  St. Petersburg: Litografiya K. Polya, 1844.

First edition. Text in Russian. One of the first Russian manuals for drawing, issued by the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of Arts in 1844 to address the shortage of relevant textbooks. The edition, popular at the time, was likely intended for students and educators in art schools and general institutions across the Russian Empire.  In the early 18th century, drawing was officially incorporated into the curricula of most educational Institutions in Russia. However, there were no specialized programs or methodologies for teaching drawing during this period. To enhance art education in the country, the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of the Arts actively promoted the creation of art-related textbooks, making this album one of the earliest of its kind.

The edition features 20 lithographs illustrating various parts of the human body, demonstrating methods for capturing form and linear structure. The album was regarded as one of the primary manuals on drawing and was widely utilized in Russian art schools and gymnasiums in the second half of the 19th century.
