amsterdam – batavia door de lucht ook post van U? 9 leaves printed on both sides with photomontage and orange and black typographic design. Oblong 8vo., 150 x 110 mm, staple bound in blue wrappers covering half the sheet size to reveal the first and last leaves. [Amsterdam]: P.T.T. Central Board, 1929.
A rare and early example of Piet Zwart’s collaboration with the Netherlands Posterijen, Telegrafie en Telefonie [P.T.T.]. Zwart’s deft use of photomontage and ‘new typography’ illustrates the capabilities of the P.T.T. to deliver mail quickly to all corners of the Dutch colonial empire. Fully illustrated publications like the present example are far more uncommon than less substantial pamphlets and brochures designed by Zwart around the same time.
Worldcat finds just three copies in the US at the Wolfsonian, Northwestern and the Art Institute of Chicago. Covers with some sun fading, overall a very good, appealing copy.
