Facile. By Paul Eluard. Unpaginated. Illustrated throughout with photographs bv Man Ray. Small 4to., 245 x 185 mm, loose as issued publisher’s wrappers. Paris: Editions G.L.M., 1935.
First Edition. A classic work of Surrealism in which Man Ray illustrates Paul Eduard’s love poems to his wife, Nusch Eluard, with a series of unusually posed nude photographs of Nusch. “In this work, Man Ray identified the female body with the space of the page by bleeding photographs across double spreads throughout the book” (Andel, p. 329).
“A prolific creator of Dadaist and Surrealist imagery, Man Ray was equally comfortable as a painter-sculptor or as a photographer. Facile is one of the most beautiful surrealist publications containing photography” (Johnson p. 184).
A near fine copy, uncommon thus. One of 1200 copies.
A Century of Artist Books 183. Johnson, Artist’s Books in the Modern Era, 1870-2000, No. 108. Andel, Avant-Garde Page Design, p. 329.
