Surrealism. By Julien Levy. [4], 192 pp. Illustrated throughout with photographs and reproductions. 4to., 250 x 200 mm, bound in publisher’s illustrated cloth and matching dust-jacket designed by Joseph Cornell. New York: Black Sun Press, 1936.
First Edition, inscribed by Julien Levy. An explanation of Surrealism by curator Levy, whose eponymous gallery in New York hosted the first Surrealist exhibition in the United States, in 1932. One of 1500 copies printed at the Black Sun Press in New York for Caresse Crosby, with the celebrated cover and scarce matching dust jacket by American assemblage artist Joseph Cornell (1903-1972).
The dust-jacket has some foxing and minor toning but is far superior to most that come on the market which tend to have major tears, missing pieces or lack it all together. Rare thus.
