Marie-Anne et son oncle sam.  Unpaginated, 18 ff.  Illustrated throughout with pochoirs.  Oblong folio, 277 x 380 mm, bound in publisher's raspberry paper boards with pochoir illustrated label on the front cover.  Paris: G. Boutitie, [1919].

First and only edition, one of 500 copies.  A striking allegorical work illustrating the relationship between France and the United States during the First World War.  Marie-Anne (France) is adrift at sea and beset by dangers on all sides.  Sharks, giant octopus, sea-serpents and dragons (the Central Powers) are continually thwarted by Oncle Sam (the US) as he fights tirelessly to rescue her.  The action is illustrated in comic book cell-like images coloured in bright pochoir with the text in French above or beneath each image with the English text appearing on the facing page.  A fine copy.

Catalogue of the Cotsen Children's Library 3736.
