GUATEMALA

GUATEMALA

Guatemala Informativa.  28 pp.  4 pp ads.  Plus 25 full page charts, graphs and infographics.  Illustrated with photographs throughout.  Folio, 310 x 240 mm, bound in publisher’s illustrated wrappers.  Guatemala: [The Central American Advertising and Commercial Development Co.], 1915.

English Edition.  A promotional periodical extolling the economic development of Guatemala at the beginning of the 20th century.  Following 28 pages of dry articles on government, education, agriculture etc., is the real star of the show; the ‘Graphic Statistical Statements’.  It consists of 25 plates of delightfully naïve graphic design featuring examples of proto isotypes plus charts with imagery that would feel right at home in a Joseph Cornell collage.

A rare survival given its format and place of publication, Worldcat finds just two copies at University of Wisconsin and Berkeley.  Covers a little soiled, a little crinkly from exposure to moisture, but overall in remarkable shape all things considered.
