Soziale Grafik. Ein Bilderbuch mit internationaler Auswahl. With a forward by Bretislav Mencak. 40 pp.  Illustrated with 18 woodcuts and linocuts by various artists.  12mo., 147 x 111 mm, bound in publisher’s printed orange wrappers with a woodcut illustration by Franz W. Seiwert on the front cover, preserved in a new black cloth box. Kladno: Nase Cesta 1932.

First Edition.  A publication by the editors of the Czech magazine Nase Cesta distributed by the Cologne magazine a bis z.  It features 18 satirical illustrations that riff on the info-graphic technique that would come to be known as the isotype.  Among the artists is Gerd Arntz, the one responsible for illustrating info-graphic pioneer Otto Neurath’s theories a few years earlier.  The other artists include; Peter Alma, Heinrich Hoerle, Krinski, Franz W. Seiwert and August Tschinkel.

Very rare, with Worldcat locating just three copies in the U.S.; The Getty, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Wolfsonian.  Rare Book Hub finds just one copy at auction in 2013.  The present copy is in fine condition.  It does, however, have one curious issue on the back cover. A pink piece of paper has been pasted over the name of the editor of a bis z, Heinrich Hoerle. By the time Soziale Grafik was published, he was no longer the editor, thus this example of a twentieth century ‘cancel’.
