The Eclogues of Vergil, in the original Latin and English prose translation by J.H. Mason. [1-3], 4-110, [6] pp. Illustrated with 43 woodcuts by Maillol. Folio, 330 x 250 mm, bound in publisher’s quarter-holland over blue boards, printed paper label. In a new blue half morocco folding box. [Weimar: Cranach Press, 1927].
One of 225 copies on fine hand-made paper from a total of 264 of the English Edition. A beautiful publication, unique in that it can be seen as either a fine example of a press book or an accomplished livre d’artist. A multi-national effort, with contributions by Eric Gill who provided the lettering on the title-page and most of the initials, Aristide Maillol responsible for the illustrations and the whole arranged by Count Harry Kessler.
A book famously marred by foxing, this copy suffers from just a few faint spots here and there. Overall very appealing in its original humble binding, corners a little bumped. Published in German (304 copies) and French (292 copies) as well.
A Century of Artists Books 49 (French Edition). Johnson, p. 109. Brinks 67.
